When money is used to intermediate the exchange of goods and services, it is performing a function as a medium of exchange. It thereby avoids the inefficiencies of a barter system.

Unit of account

A unit of account is a standard numerical unit of measurement of the market value of goods, services, and other transactions. Also known as a “measure” or “standard” of relative worth and deferred payment, a unit of account is a necessary prerequisite for the formulation of commercial agreements that involve debt. To function as a ‘unit of account’, whatever is being used as money must be:

Divisible into smaller units without loss of value; precious metals can be coined from bars, or melted down into bars again.

Fungible: that is, one unit or piece must be perceived as equivalent to any other, which is why diamonds, works of art or real estate are not suitable as money.

A specific weight, or measure, or size to be verifiably countable. For instance, coins are often milled with a reeded edge, so that any removal of material from the coin (lowering its commodity value) will be easy to detect.

Store of value

To act as a store of value, a money must be able to be reliably saved, stored, and retrieved – and be predictably usable as a medium of exchange when it is retrieved. The value of the money must also remain stable over time. In that sense, inflation by reducing the value of money, diminishes the ability of the money to function as a store of value.

Standard of deferred payment

While standard of deferred payment is distinguished by some texts, particularly older ones, other texts subsume this under other functions. A standard of deferred payment is an accepted way to settle a debt – a unit in which debts are denominated, and the status of money as legal tender, in those jurisdictions which have this concept, states that it may function for the discharge of debts. When debts are denominated in money, the real value of debts may change due to inflation and deflation, and for sovereign and international debts via debasement and devaluation.

Money supply

In economics, money is a broad term that refers to any financial instrument that can fulfill the functions of money (detailed above). These financial instruments together are collectively referred to as the money supply of an economy. Since the money supply consists of various financial instruments (usually currency, demand deposits and various other types of deposits), the amount of money in an economy is measured by adding together these financial instruments creating a monetary aggregate. Modern monetary theory distinguishes among different types of monetary aggregates, using a categorization system that focuses on the liquidity of the financial instrument used as money.

Market liquidity

Market liquidity describes how easily an item can be traded for another item, or into the common currency within an economy. Money is the most liquid asset because it is universally recognised and accepted as the common currency. In this way, money gives consumers the freedom to trade goods and services easily without having to barter.

Liquid financial instruments are easily tradable and have low transaction costs. There should be no (or minimal) spread between the prices to buy and sell the instrument being used as money.

Money is any object that is generally accepted as payment for goods, services and repayment of debts in a given country or socio-economic context. The main functions of money are distinguished as: a medium of exchange; a unit of account; a store of value; and, occasionally, a standard of deferred payment.

Money originated as commodity money, but nearly all contemporary money systems are based on fiat money. Fiat money is without intrinsic use value as a physical commodity, and derives its value by being declared by a government to be legal tender; that is, it must be accepted as a form of payment within the boundaries of the country, for “all debts, public and private”.

The money supply of a country consists of currency (banknotes and coins) and demand deposits or ‘bank money’ (the balance held in banking accounts and savings accounts). These demand deposits usually account for a much larger part of the money supply than currency. Bank money is intangible and exists only in the form of various bank records. Despite being intangible, bank money still performs the basic functions of money, being generally accepted as a form of payment.

The word money is believed to originate from a temple of Hera, located on Capitoline, one of Rome’s seven hills. In the ancient world Hera was often associated with money. The temple of Juno Moneta at Rome was the place where the mint of Ancient Rome was located. The name Juno may derive from the Etruscan goddess Uni (which means; the one, unique, unit, union, united) and Moneta either from the Latin word monere (remind, warn, or instruct) or the Greek word moneres (alone, unique).

However, did you know that anything can constitute as money in an economic system? Look around and you may spot children using candy as money between themselves, or card collectors trading basic card types for other more exotic versions. Pick up a History book, and you may also read that at one point in ancient China copper knives were traded as currency, whereas for meso-American civilizations coffee beans were highly prized.

Generally speaking, if it’s collected in mass quantities for the sake of trading it anytime and anywhere then chances are that it’s money. Of course, it’s only money if most people you know are willing to buy it!

Who First Discovered Money?

Money historically evolved from bartering. To trace its origins is extremely difficult, but there is historical information leading back to the greek and roman empires. For now its beginnings remain as mysterious similarly as whom first created fire or invented the wheel. In the past, money was generally considered to have the following four main functions, which are summed up in a rhyme;

“Money is a matter of four functions, a medium, a measure, a standard, a store.”

Money functions as a medium of exchange, a unit of account, a standard of deferred payment, and a store of value. However, most modern textbooks now list only three functions, that of medium of exchange, unit of account, and store of value, not considering a standard of deferred payment as a distinguished function, but rather subsuming it in the others.

Given how anything can be money under the right circumstances, there are particular qualities that make certain kinds more attractive than others:

1) Divisibility- Can be easily cut, added, and measured at any fraction to match a certain price.

2) Valuable non-monetary uses- Has special properties that make it useful in the production processes of other items.

Prepared foods and convenience foods will always be much more expensive than the generic ingredients needed to make the food. Preparing food in bulk and in advance also gives you the opportunity to plan ahead and be more accurate in your budget. Save Money by buying in bulk whenever you can. One thing to be aware of when buying in bulk is to be sure that any product you buy will get used before it goes bad – you won’t save money if you have to throw stuff away. Buying in bulk is not only a good way to save money it is also a good strategy for coping with and surviving emergencies.

4) Buy used. Sure, we all like to buy new. But there are huge money savings to be made in buying used. Typically cars lose one-third of their value in the first 24 months from new. Why not buy a car 24 months old? Other items such as clothes can be worth even less just the day after new. Look for ways to buy “as good as new” items and save money. Typical products you might consider buying used to save money include: cars, clothes, electrical goods, garden items… tools and sheds, household items… pots and pans, the list of used goods where you can save money is endless.

5) Don’t carry excessive debt. Some debt in our lives may be essential. We may need a mortgage to purchase a home, we may need to use our credit card to make purchases until pay-day, but your aim to save money should be to have as little debt as possible. Credit Card deb is typically the most expensive debt we may carry. You will be able to save money every month if you make it an absolute rule to pay off your outstanding balance every month. If you can have the discipline to do this you will save money by effectively having no debt, and thus no interest charge on your credit card(s).

6) Make sure a sale is a sale. By this I mean do your price research before you commit to making an expensive purchase in a retailers money-off sale. You have to be sure the sale really is a sale and not a creative marketing strategy of the store to encourage you to spend your money without thinking. Once you have researched the true price of a product (any product) you are in a good position to take advantage of a sale, special offer or discount and really save money. “Buy one get one free”, “50% off”, and “Huge Discount” will only help you save money if the actual price you pay is lower than you would pay somewhere else for exactly the same product.

7) Shop Wisely. Consider markets, superstores, farmer’s markets, local shops, marts and stores. Anywhere is worth checking out to see if you can save money. Farmer’s Markets can be particularly good places to save money. Typically you are buying direct from the producer of the product so the savings are passed on to you. Use your bulk buying strategy here – farmer’s markets often offer opportunities to save money by buying larger quantities of staples, for instance potatoes, rice or corn. Save money and shop wisely.

Eat in rather than out. This is a huge area where you can save money. A cup of coffee taken out could easily cost you TWENTY times (or more) what it would cost you to make it at home. So think before you drink when you are out. Eating is the same. Fast food restaurants are counting on you eating food that you perhaps don’t really need at that time but buy just because it is quick. Why not wait until you get home and have a more nutritious meal and save money at the same time.

There are many reasons why someone may want to work from home. They may be college students that need extra income, a parent who wants to stay home with their child or children, or someone who is working a full time job. I am one of the latter. Finally, if they do ask for money to join so you can access their job database make sure you can afford it – never spend money you don’t have in the attempt to make extra money.

Is the second best resource for anyone who wants to work from home – especially for work at home moms. They not only give you access to job information, but tell you how to access grants, how to start a home business, how to get the resources to start a business and a whole lot more. All this information is free, so investigate all the information that is available to you. Also, there are listings of work at home scams – both from the past and recent scams that you may be unaware of. This is a great resource for anyone who is thinking of working at home. Finally, there is a blog and forum as well so you can communicate with those in the same situation as you and you can learn from their experience.

Very similar to WHAM and is not only valuable to single moms, but for anyone who wants to work from home. WHAM is a good resource, but BizyMoms has a lot more information to access and the site is more professional and a bit more user friendly. Not only do they offer information about jobs and scams that are currently going on, but they give you access free e-courses to help you learn about working from home, and how to start your own home business if that is the route that you want to take. The options that you have when you work at home are almost limitless and so is their source of information – this site covers topics and issues you hadn’t even though of until you found their site. It is the best work at home search and resource tool I have found so far, and is completely free.

The website itself is not that user friendly and is not that “aesthetically appealing” as it could be but does give you a lot of free information. Also, it is endorsed by the BBBOnLine which is associated with the BBB. (be forewarned there is also the BBB online which is not affiliated with the BBB and is a completely separate entity.) One of the benefits of this site is that it allows you to get online certification which allows employers to see that you are qualified for the job they are offering even though you may not have the experience shown directly on your resume.

Contains a mix of free and paid information, but is legitimate. Not only do they give you information on finding a work at home job, but there are a number of links to articles that give you specific information about all the types of work at home jobs that are available. Not only does it cover work at home jobs, but opening your own business, freelance writing and more. If you can not find what you are looking for specifically on this site chances are there is a link taking you to the information that you need.

Even though this is a paid site – it is inexpensive and the payment is to gain access to their job bank information. I have used this site personally, and had a very positive experience. The customer service is very friendly and responds quickly to any questions or concerns that you may have. Everything that they post is 100% legitimate, and if someone emails them about a suspected scam the listing is removed until it is verified. The only downside to this site is that it is geared more toward professionals. If you are new to the job market or do not have a lot of experience with computers, call centers, telemarketing, and medical transcription this may not be the place for you. However, the fee does give you access to other online opportunities that may work. Since I did not have the experience for most of the job listings I used the other resources and they more than paid for the monthly fee that I paid the one month I did use it.
